Opeyemi Tunde OSUNDARE is a university Lecturer with years of experience in crop improvement through the use of conventional, molecular and bioinformatic tools. He holds a Ph.D. in Plant Breeding and Genetics. He was a Doctoral Research Fellow at the Genetic Resources Centre, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan, from 2017 to 2021. He has published widely on genetic diversity, using high throughput markers to detect molecular and phenotypic variability, and identified significant markers associated with plant traits. He has worked on the characterization of cereals and legumes, yield stability and plant nutrition, making selection easier for Farmers and Researchers. He received the Global Crop Diversity Trust Fund 2017-2021 through the Genetic Resources Centre, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan. He is a reviewer to many international and societal journals. He is currently working on other projects and not relenting in his several scientific and technical approaches in ensuring food and nutritional security.
Research Interests
Specifically, my research areas include:
1. Crop Improvement and Variety Development
Breeding for improved yield, drought tolerance, disease resistance, and early maturity in staple crops such as cowpea, maize, cassava, and indigenous or underutilized legumes such as bambara groundnut, african yam bean and lima beans to Nigeria.
2. Molecular Breeding and Genetic Diversity
Application of molecular markers, DNA fingerprinting, and genomic selection to characterize germplasm, assess genetic diversity, and accelerate breeding programs for target traits.
3. Nutritional and Biofortification Breeding
Development of biofortified crop varieties with enhanced levels of protein, provitamin A, iron, and zinc to address malnutrition and improve human health among rural communities.
4. Climate-Smart Agriculture and Stress Physiology
Genetic improvement of crops for adaptation to climate change, with emphasis on yield, drought tolerance, and resilience to emerging pests and diseases.
5. Conservation and Utilization of Plant Genetic Resources
Evaluation, documentation, and conservation of indigenous and underutilized crops in Nigeria and Africa for breeding and commercialization.
6. Participatory Plant Breeding and Seed Systems
Collaborating with farmers and agribusinesses to develop farmer-preferred varieties and strengthen community seed systems for sustainable adoption of improved varieties.
My long-term goal is to contribute to national food and nutrition security through science-driven plant breeding, while training the next generation of plant breeders and geneticists at Federal University Oye-Ekiti. I am particularly committed to translating research into improved varieties that reach farmers and add value to the agricultural economy in the world.
