Biography

Segun I. Oyedeji is a Professor of Molecular Parasitology and Genetics, in the Department of Animal and Environmental Biology, FUOYE. He earned his B.Tech. in Pure and Applied Biology from LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, and both M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Parasitology from the University of Ibadan. He is a recipient of the prestigious Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD) PhD Research Scholarship and the MIMPAC/TDR PhD Research Training Fellowship, both at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Eberhard Karls University, Tübingen, Germany. Prof. Oyedeji’s research focuses on the molecular epidemiology and population genetics of both human and malaria parasites. His work integrates field-based studies with molecular techniques—such as PCR, DNA sequencing, and genotyping—to investigate parasite genetic diversity, multiplicity of infection, and the role of host genetic polymorphisms (IL-18, IL-18R1, and TNF-α genes) in susceptibility/resistance to malaria. He has also contributed significantly to the fields of molecular diagnosis, submicroscopic and mixed-species infections. Oyedeji has over 25 peer-reviewed articles in reputable journals, including Malaria Journal, Acta Parasitologica, PLoS Journals, Parasitology Research, Human Immunology, and Annals of Tropical Medicine. He is a recipient of numerous international travel awards, including from Keystone Symposia, the British Society of Parasitology, the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), and the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, enabling him to present his findings at major conferences across Africa, Europe, North America, and Asia. Beyond research, Prof. Oyedeji is an active member of several learned societies, including the BSP, RSTMH (UK), ASM, ASTMH (USA), PPSN, BSN, and ZSN (Nigeria). He is an Academic Editor for PLOS ONE and a reviewer for multiple international journals. He has held several administrative roles within his university, including Deputy Dean and Acting HoD.
