Prof. Ayodele Oluwaseun Ajayi

Professor

Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Life Sciences

Area of Specialization: Medical and Public Health Microbiology

Biography

I am a Professor of Medical Microbiology at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Nigeria, years of experience in teaching, research, postgraduate supervision, and administration. He obtained his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in Microbiology from the University of Ado-Ekiti (now Ekiti State University), Nigeria, before undertaking a prestigious TWAS-CNPq Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Universidade Estadual de Londrina, Paraná, Brazil, where he advanced his expertise in molecular microbiology, bacterial genomics, and antimicrobial resistance. My research is centered on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), molecular epidemiology, public health microbiology, pharmaceutical microbiology, bacterial genomics, and the One Health approach to infectious disease surveillance. His work has contributed significantly to understanding the emergence and dissemination of multidrug-resistant bacteria in clinical, veterinary, food, and environmental settings, with particular emphasis on plasmid-mediated resistance, extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing organisms, and antimicrobial stewardship. I have authored and co-authored numerous scientific publications in reputable international peer-reviewed journals and has successfully supervised postgraduate students whose research addresses priority infectious disease and public health challenges in Nigeria. I havve served as Acting Head of Department, Deputy Dean, member of University Senate, and participant in several university committees on research, quality assurance, accreditation, and strategic development. I am a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and a member of some professional organizations, including the American Society for Microbiology and the Biotechnology Society of Nigeria. I also serve as a reviewer for leading international journals, including PLOS ONE, BMC Infectious Diseases, BMC Public Health, Frontiers in Medicine, BMC Microbiology, and Infection and Drug Resistance. Current research integrates molecular microbiology, genomics, artificial intelligence, and public health intelligence to strengthen infectious disease surveillance and combat antimicrobial resistance across Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa
