Biography

Sunday Abatan is a dynamic scholar and early-career researcher whose work sits at the intersection of health demography, public health, and policy. A PhD candidate in the Department of Demography and Social Statistics at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, he is passionate about generating evidence to improve population health outcomes across Africa. As a lecturer at Federal University Oye-Ekiti Nigeria, he is a  fellow of the Union for African Population Studies (UAPS)/AIR Early Career Research Program, Abatan brings both  analytical depth and field experience to his research. His portfolio spans mortality analysis, reproductive and child health, communicable and non-communicable diseases, malaria, tuberculosis, maternal health, and quality of care. He skilfully applies statistical tools such as SPSS, STATA, EViews, R, and OpenBUGS, as well as specialised demographic techniques, to produce actionable insights for health systems. His ongoing research explores issues such as facility preparedness for measles outbreaks, determinants of child survival, male involvement in sexual and reproductive health, bridging gaps in the use of modern oncology and alternative medicine in men's health, and perceptions of using mobile health apps to improve SRH. These projects reflect his commitment to evidence-driven interventions that are culturally relevant and policy-responsive. The belief that data not only measures problems but also shapes solutions guides Abatan's work. With a vision to bridge the gap between research and practice, Sunday Abatan is steadily building a reputation as a thoughtful voice in African population health—equally at home with datasets, policy debates, and community realities.
