Dr. Charles Adebayo Oyelami
Reader / Associate Professor
Department of Geology, Faculty of Physical Science
Area of Specialization: Engineering Geology, Environmental Geology and Hydrogeology
Biography
Dr. Charles Oyelami is a distinguished academic and researcher in Engineering and Environmental Geology with extensive experience in teaching, research, professional practice, and academic leadership. He began his academic career as an Assistant Lecturer at Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Osogbo, in October 2011, where he progressed steadily through the academic ranks before joining the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) as a Senior Lecturer in April 2021. He currently holds the position of Reader (Associate Professor) in Engineering and Environmental Geology.
Over the years, Dr. Oyelami has contributed significantly to capacity building through teaching, mentoring, and supervising numerous postgraduate and doctoral students within Nigeria and internationally. He has also served as an external examiner to several universities both within and outside Nigeria, including institutions in South Africa.
Dr. Oyelami is actively involved in professional practice and scholarship through membership and fellowship of several reputable professional bodies, including the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS), International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG), and the Nigerian Association for Engineering Geology and Environment (NAEGE), where he serves as a Council Member. He is also a registered professional with the Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG).
One of the highlights of his research, undertaken in collaboration with Professor Jan Louis Van Rooy, focused on the utilization of residual tropical soils for sustainable housing development in Africa, advancing resource-efficient approaches aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from construction materials.
His current research focuses on environmental sustainability through the characterization of soil, water, and air as pathways of environmental contamination. With over 30 peer-reviewed publications and several prestigious scholarships and research grants, including the TETFund IBR Research Grant and South African NRF Doctoral Research Grant, Dr. Oyelami continues to make impactful contributions to academia and sustainable development.
