Biography
Agwu Agwu Ejem obtained a PhD in Mass Communication from Imo State University, Owerri, specialising in film theory and gender communication. He also has an MSc and a BSc degree in the same discipline. His doctoral thesis focused on hypermasculinity in Nigerian films, but he has a broad interest and has published extensively in development communication, particularly in disaster risk communication, health communication, differential vulnerability to disasters, and technology transfer in agricultural communication. Dr Ejem’s research has explored how gender is constructed through films and new media, gendered asymmetry in health and economic vulnerability to disaster risk, the role of media in the social amplification and attenuation of risk during disaster events, and the role of communication in driving social and behavioural change, particularly in underserved and high-risk communities. Methodologically, he is trained in both qualitative and quantitative research, with experience in survey, open-ended interviewing, web scraping and analysis, and (collaborative) thematic analysis.
Dr Agwu A. Ejem is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Federal University Oye-Ekiti.
