Dr. Oluwabamise Lekan Faboya

Reader / Associate Professor

Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Physical Science

Area of Specialization: Petroleum Geochemistry and Environmental Geochemistry

Biography

Dr. Oluwabamise Lekan Faboya obtained a B.Sc. in Industrial Chemistry from the University of Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria, in 2006. He earned his M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry and Ph.D. in Organic Geochemistry from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, in 2010 and 2016, respectively. He began his academic career in 2011 and has since trained and mentored numerous undergraduate and postgraduate students in Chemistry. He currently serves as the Acting Head of the Department of Chemistry at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Nigeria.

Dr. Faboya is a recipient of several prestigious international fellowships, including the Chinese Academy of Sciences–The World Academy of Sciences (CAS–TWAS) Fellowship, the Chinese Academy of Sciences President's International Fellowship Initiative (CAS–PIFI), and the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers in Germany.

His research interests span organic geochemistry, environmental chemistry, atmospheric chemistry, and climate-related studies. His earlier research focused on the application of organic geochemical techniques to petroleum exploration, particularly the identification of molecular biomarkers in source rocks and crude oils from the Niger Delta Basin to elucidate petroleum source, correlation, and migration pathways. He has also investigated environmental contamination associated with petroleum exploration and forest fires using aliphatic biomarkers, stable carbon isotope composition, and organic contaminants.

His Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship at the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS), Germany, broadened his research into atmospheric chemistry. His current work focuses on the characterization, source apportionment, and health risk assessment of PM₂.₅-bound organic pollutants in Nigerian megacities. Dr. Faboya has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in reputable international journals.

Research Interests

1. Organic geochemical analyses of fossil fuels (gas shale, coal, oil sand and oil shale)
2. Environmental geochemistry including atmospheric pollution study
