Dr. Joshua Bature Hassan
Lecturer II
Department of Software Engineering, Faculty of Computing
Area of Specialization: Natural Language Processing, Computatioal Linguistic and AI
Biography
Dr. Joshua Bature Hassan holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Science, awarded on the Merit List. His doctoral research focused on Natural Language Processing (NLP), Computational Linguistics, and Speech Emotion Recognition, and his external examiner highly commended it as the best doctoral thesis he had ever examined. He also holds a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Computer Science, with Distinction, and a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Computer Science. He currently serves as a Lecturer II in the Department of Computer Science at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Nigeria. Throughout his academic career, Joshua has demonstrated a strong commitment to academic excellence, research, and continuous learning. He is a recipient of the prestigious MTN Foundation Science and Technology Scholarship (MTNF-STS), and during his doctoral studies, he emerged as the first-place winner of a research competition, receiving recognition for the originality, relevance, and potential impact of his research. As part of his doctoral research, Joshua developed the Nigerian Speech Emotion Dataset (NISEDS) and proposed a stacked ensemble learning framework for speaker-independent speech emotion recognition. His research contributes to affective computing, intelligent speech processing, and the development of more representative speech datasets for AI systems. His broader research interests include Natural Language Processing (NLP), Computational Linguistics, Speech Emotion Recognition, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Human–Computer Interaction (HCI), and Data Science — with particular focus on developing intelligent language and speech technologies for low-resource environments, addressing algorithmic bias in artificial intelligence, and building AI-driven solutions responsive to African contexts. He has authored and co-authored scholarly publications in reputable journals and continues to contribute to research in artificial intelligence, computational intelligence, and speech-based technologies. Beyond research, Joshua is passionate about teaching, student mentoring, and fostering innovation.
