Dr. Serifat Bolanle Asiyanbi

Biography

Serifat Bolanle Asiyanbi (PhD) is a lecturer in the History and International Studies Department at Federal University Oye-Ekiti. She holds a PhD, M.Sc., and B.Sc. in International Relations from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. Her research interests include migration and human trafficking, security issues related to small arms and light weapons, and gender-related topics, with a particular focus on human and border security in West Africa.
Dr Asiyanbi has published widely in both national and international journals, focusing on ECOWAS policies regarding small arms, West African security, human trafficking, and the digital role in child trafficking. She has also researched migration and the involvement of women in politics. Additionally, she has written and co-written chapters in books examining West African human security and border policies. She has held several academic leadership positions, including serving as acting head of her department, a member of the department's editorial board, a faculty representative, and a member of the senate council at the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti. She has also supervised numerous undergraduate students.
Dr Asiyanbi has presented papers at international conferences and attended numerous workshops on decolonisation of knowledge and political science methodology, among other topics. She is a member of the Lagos Studies Association, the Nigerian Political Science Association, and the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs.

Research Interests

Dr Serifat Asiyanbi conducts detailed research on security challenges in West Africa, focusing on key areas like human, national, and border security. She examines how the arbitrary colonial borders contribute to insecurity among West African States. Her work also considers the impact of illegal arms trade and proliferation on regional insecurity. Additionally, she investigates the permeability of West African societies concerning human and child trafficking and explores how child commodification and child-rearing have become coping mechanisms for infertile couples. She also analyses how colonial ideologies reinforce women's inequality in the region. Dr Asiyanbi critically assesses how policies on national, border, and human security interact and evaluates their effectiveness, emphasising the importance of comprehensive strategies to improve safety across member states.
