Prof. Stanley Ozoemena Agbo
Professor
Department of Animal and Environmental Biology, Faculty of Life Sciences
Area of Specialization: Environmental toxicology and Ecotoxicology
Biography
Stanley Ozoemena Agbo hails from Mbu-Amon in Isi-uzo LGA, Enugu State, Nigeria. He attended Central School Mbu-Amon, Nsukka High School, and later Special Science School, Igbeagu-Abakaliki for his early education.
Stanley is an Environmental Toxicologist with a minor in Environmental Chemistry. He undertook his postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Prof. Jussi V. K. Kukkonen at the University of Eastern Finland. As a beneficiary of the Marie Curie Early Stage Training Fellowship, he received his PhD in 2013 from University of Eastern Finland.
Prior to this, Stanley completed MSc in Biomolecular Sciences with a Rutger's fellowship (Vrije University Amsterdam, 2005 - 2007), and an earlier MSc in Toxicology and Environmental Health, with the prestigious Utrecht Excellence Scholarship (Utrecht University, Netherlands, 2003 - 2005). Stanley obtained a BSc degree in Biological Sciences from University College Utrecht, Utrecht University (Class 2003).
In the course of PhD training, Stanley received an individual research grant from the Finnish Cultural Foundation in 2010 β 2011, and enjoyed several conference travel grants, most notably from the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. As part of Marie Curie Fellowship Research Mobility, he spent a period in 2010 at the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research (UFZ), Leipzig, Germany.
His areas of research interest include risk assessment of emerging pollutants using classical endpoints and histopathological signatures to assess toxicity of plastics, tyre wear particles, agro-chemicals, and petroleum hydrocarbons in catfish, crop and vegetable plants, mosquito larvae, and zooplankton. In essence, these research areas promote the understanding of underlying concepts of pollutant ageing and sequestration, bioavailability, uptake, bioaccumulation and toxicity in biota.
As part of his administrative experience, Stanley served as the Head (August 2021-July 2024) and Examination Officer in the department of Animal and Environmental Biology.
He enjoys various sports including cycling, football, and karate.
Research Interests
Toxicity of plastics, tyre-wear particles, spent engine oil, aluminum/iron filings in soil and aquatic models, earthworm, crop/vegetable plants, catfish, mosquito larvae, zooplankton; Effects studies using classical toxicity endpoints and histopathology..
