Biography

He holds a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Ilorin. His research focuses on elucidating the biochemical and molecular mechanisms underlying infectious, metabolic, and cardiovascular diseases, with a view to identifying novel therapeutic targets and interventions for conditions that pose significant global health challenges. His work focuses on investigating the therapeutic and preventive potentials of medicinal plants and naturally occurring bioactive compounds in the management of these disease conditions. Moreover, his research also investigates the regulation of mitochondrial membrane permeability transition pore (mPTP) opening by bioactive agents and the implications of mitochondrial dysfunction in disease pathogenesis. This work seeks to advance the development of therapeutic strategies for disorders associated with impaired apoptosis, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysregulation.
He was a CONICET Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Health Sciences Research (INICSA), National University of Cordoba, Argentina, where he conducted research in cellular and molecular biology. He also held a postdoctoral research position at the Medicinal and Computational Chemistry Research Unit, Rhodes University, South Africa, focusing on computational drug discovery and medicinal chemistry. He has received research funding, including the TETFund Institutional-Based Research (IBR) Intervention Grant, and was a member of a research team awarded a grant by the Argentine National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET). He serves as a reviewer for more than 20 international peer-reviewed journals and has published in reputable national and international journals.

Research Interests

• Biochemical basis/pathogenesis of infectious, metabolic, and cardiovascular diseases.
• Identification, isolation and characterisation of plant bioactive compounds.
• Molecular mechanism of medicinal plants and bioactive compounds for the management of various pathological conditions.
• Mitochondria as a pharmacological target for the development of drugs from plant origin, useful in situations where an increased rate of apoptosis is
required for chemotherapy.
• Application of computational tools for therapeutic target identification.
